THE GALESBURG-AUGUSTA EDUCATION FOUNDATION
The Mission of the Galesburg-Augusta Education Foundation is to provide financial support to Galesburg-Augusta graduates for their continued education. The Foundation also provides grants to teachers for concepts that enhance education in our district.
What is the G-A Education Foundation? It is a non-profit organization established to promote, receive, invest and administer funds or other tangible gifts for students. The Foundation Board has established an endowment fund, the interest on which provides scholarships for continuing education. Occasionally grants are provided to enhance programs within the G-A Community School District.
Why was the Foundation organized? The foundation was organized to provide an an avenue for individuals and businesses to contribute funds into the educational system in an organized manner that can be of financial benefit to the donor and a benefit to G-A students We are now part of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation which can manage our investments in an efficient and professional manner and can maximize benefits to donors.
What are the Education Foundation objectives? All gifts are to be used solely for the support or enhancement of educational, literary, artistic or scientific endeavors of the school district. Currently the scholarship awards are given to the high school and post-graduate students from the Galesburg-Augusta community. They include the Helen Houvener Scholarship, the June McNeil Scholarship, the Lions' Club Scholarship, and the Walter Lemmien Scholarship.
Some of the possible actions of the Foundation might be to: Give grants to help further students' education according to the wishes of the donor Give grants to students and/or staff for the development of innovative educational programs
Is there a tax advantage for donors to the Education Foundation? Yes! Legal requirements have been fulfilled so that all donations are eligible for appropriate federal charitable tax deductions. In addition, gifts to the Education Foundation may be eligible for the Michigan Community Foundation Tax Credit, which offers donors a 50% tax credit of the amount contributed to a community foundation endowment fund. Individuals who contribute $200 may receive a $100 state tax credit, married couples who donate $400 may be eligible for a $200 credit; and businesses that contribute $10,000 may be eligible for a $5,000 credit.
How can gifts be made to the Education Foundation? There are many methods of giving including the following: cash gifts, securities, trusts, wills or bequests, life insurance, real property or business inventory.
The Board of Trustees is required by statute to monitor all contributions to the Education Foundation. The Board will attempt to honor a request that a donation be designated for a specific project. The G-A Education Foundation is very grateful to have received bequests from the estates of Helen Houvener and June McNeil. There are qualifications attached to the scholarships funded by these bequests. Some local corporations provide for matching gifts. Check with your employer.
